Barton Hills is a small neighborhood near Zilker Park in the Western half of the 78704 ZIP code. The neighborhood is less than three miles from Downtown Austin, and is near both the restaurants and shops of South Lamar Boulevard and Barton Springs Road. The proximity to both Downtown and the Zilker Park area make Barton Hills perhaps Austin's most conveniently located neighborhood. Barton Springs, Lady Bird Lake, and the Hike and Bike Trail are all nearby. Barton Hills is serviced by the Austin Independent School District. Students attend either Zilker or Barton Hills Elementary, while O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School serve the whole of the neighborhood.
Though some homes in Barton Hills were built as early as the 1930's, most homes in the neighborhood were built from the late 50's to the mid 70's. Many homes in this neighborhood are in the 1,500-2,000 square foot range. There are also some select larger residences up to 3,900 square feet. Nearby private schools include The Khabele School (6th to 12th), St. Ignatius Martyr School (Pre-K through 8th), Austin Montessori School (Pre-K through 9th) and Parkside Community School (Montessori through 6th). Area amenities include Zilker Park, Barton Springs, and the hiking and swimming of Gus Fruh Park. The area is also close to Lady Bird Lake and Lake Austin for water activities. The Barton Hills Neighborhood Association is the primary community group for the area. For groceries, there's a Sprouts market on the southern end of the neighborhood for convenience, and for gourmet groceries, a Central Market about two miles south on South Lamar. The flagship Whole Foods is also about 1.5 miles north at 5th and Lamar. Barring a traffic jam, it only takes 10 minutes to reach downtown from Barton Hills.
