Though some homes in Barton Hills were built as early as the 1930's, most homes in the neighborhood were built from the late 50's to the mid 70's. Many homes in this neighborhood are in the 1,500-2,000 square foot range. There are also some select larger residences. Nearby private schools include The Khabele School (6th to 12th), St. Ignatius Martyr School (Pre-K through 8th), Austin Montessori School (Pre-K through 9th) and Parkside Community School (Montessori through 6th). Area amenities include Zilker Park, Barton Springs, and the hiking and swimming of Gus Fruh Park. The area is also close to Lady Bird Lake and Lake Austin for water activities. Nearby golf courses include Lions Municipal ($18-20), Hancock ($18-19), and Butler Pitch and Putt ($7). The Barton Hills Neighborhood Association is the primary community group for the area and is quite active, with clean-up days, parades, and other activities. For groceries, there's a Sun Harvest market on the southern end of the neighborhood for convenience, and for gourmet groceries, a Central Market about two miles south on South Lamar. The flagship Whole Foods is also about 1.5 miles north at 5th and Lamar. Barring a traffic jam, it only takes 10 minutes to reach downtown from Barton Hills.
